Mayrhofen is a busy, sociable valley town with a long tradition as a holiday destination. It has a younger, livelier feel than many Tyrolean resorts, and the two ski sectors give it a clear identity: the sporting Penken network and the gentler, quieter upper Ahorn. It is a town that works best if you value a lively base and good facilities over a quiet, traditional village feel.
Mountopolis has 142km of piste: roughly 44km easy, 66km intermediate and 32km difficult, according to a specialist breakdown. The Penken network is the more sporting sector, with the PenkenPark snowpark, which has five areas and separate features for different abilities, and the Harakiri run, which has a 78% gradient (not 78 degrees). The upper Ahorn terrain is gentler, but the ValleyRun Ahorn, a black run of about 5.5km with over 1,300m of descent, is demanding and is not a beginner route. Ahorn and Penken are accessed independently and are not linked by piste.
The base at about 630m is low, so the lower pistes depend heavily on snowmaking and are more vulnerable to warm spells. The upper mountain reaches about 2,500m according to specialist sources, and it is the part to rely on in marginal conditions. Season dates differ by lift: the Penkenbahn and Horbergbahn run from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, while the Ahornbahn and Möslbahn run from 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. A measured average snowfall figure was not available.
The area has 61 lifts, with the Penkenbahn gondola and the Ahornbahn as the main valley access points. The Ahornbahn and ValleyRun open at 7:30 a.m., earlier than the other lifts. Penken and Ahorn are separate sectors on opposite sides of the valley, so you choose one for a given day. The wider Zillertal Superskipass gives access to other areas, including Hintertux, but those require separate travel.
Mayrhofen itself is the main base, a full-sized town with hotels, apartments and guesthouses across a wide price range. The Penkenbahn is within easy reach of the centre, and Finkenberg is a smaller alternative close to the Penken side.
Innsbruck is the closest airport, about an hour by road via the A12 Inntal motorway and the Zillertal exit. Munich is around two hours. The Zillertalbahn narrow-gauge railway links Mayrhofen to the main line at Jenbach, which is useful for rail travellers.

Mayrhofen has a reputation as a lively resort, with a busy mix of mountain huts on the slopes and bars and restaurants in the town. Anyone planning a trip around specific venues should check what is currently open, since nightlife changes from season to season. Families will find the PenkenPark KidsPark and the Family Park at the Ahorn FunRide useful.
Decide which sector suits you before you buy: Penken for variety and the park, Ahorn for a calmer day and an early start on the ValleyRun. Do not assume the lower slopes will be in good condition in early December or in warm weather. If you want more terrain, consider a day trip to Hintertux on the Zillertal Superskipass.
Scores reflect Mayrhofen's local Mountopolis area (142km, 61 lifts), not the wider Zillertal Superskipass network. Snow reliability (6.5) reflects the low 630m base, so valley runs depend on snowmaking. The altitude range (630–2,500m) comes from a specialist listing, as a precise operator figure was not found. Après-ski (8.5) is based on the town's reputation and should be checked against current venues.
