Kasprowy Wierch – Zakopane
Poland's highest ski mountain — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve above Zakopane, almost entirely expert terrain, and a cultural pull as strong as the powder.

Jasná's claim to be Central Europe's largest ski area is well-supported — no single lift-linked ski area in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, or Poland matches its confirmed 51km of groomed piste and 1,081m vertical. The resort is backed by TMR Group, the same operator that runs Jasná's sister properties at Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatras, giving it a level of investment and operational standards that sets it apart from independently operated Central European resorts. The Low Tatras location — mature spruce and beech forests rising to an above-treeline summit — gives Jasná a mountain character that feels genuinely alpine rather than the compact, forested hills of many central European ski areas.
Fifty-one kilometres of groomed piste spread across the south and north faces of Mount Chopok, with an additional 12 designated freeride zones on both faces that extend the skiable terrain considerably beyond the marked runs. The south face (Jasná side) carries the resort's main infrastructure — gondolas, chairlifts, and the upper mountain terrain approaching the Chopok summit at 2,024m. The north face (Chopok North, Liptovský Mikuláš side) is accessible via a cross-ridge traverse and offers a different character: more sheltered, north-facing terrain that holds powder longer after snowfall. The piste breakdown (approximately 25km easy + 18km medium + 8km hard) provides a genuine range across skill levels, with the south face's upper runs and the north face freeride zones providing the most challenging skiing.
The Carpathian climate produces cold winters with less consistent natural snowfall than the Alps, but Jasná's investment in snowmaking covers over 36km of piste with a system capable of sustained operation in low-temperature periods. The mountain's 2,024m summit provides meaningful altitude that extends the season from early December to late April in normal years. Natural powder days in the Low Tatras can be exceptional — the freeride zones particularly come into their own with 20–30cm of fresh snowfall. The north-facing Chopok North sector retains cold powder conditions significantly longer than the south-facing main piste network.
Twenty-three lifts serve the resort — 3 gondolas, 1 funitel, 1 funicular, 8 chairlifts, 5 surface lifts, and 5 magic carpets — with a combined capacity of 28,439 skiers per hour. The Funitel from Jasná village to the Chopok summit is the signature infrastructure element, providing a reliable ascent to the summit even in wind conditions that would close a conventional cable car. The lift system was progressively modernised under TMR Group ownership, with recent investment in the base gondola and upper mountain chairlifts. The Gopass electronic ticket system, shared across all TMR properties, allows seamless access management and multi-resort pass loading.
Accommodation at Jasná distributes between the valley resorts of Demänovská Dolina and the town of Liptovský Mikuláš, 12km away at the valley floor on the Váh River. The Jasná valley has grown substantially since TMR's investment in resort infrastructure, with hotels, apartments, and wellness facilities concentrated at the ski area base. Liptovský Mikuláš provides a genuine Slovak town experience with lower prices, more accommodation variety, and easy access to the region's natural and historical attractions. The nearby Demänovská Cave of Liberty (a large stalactite cave system in the same valley) is one of Slovakia's most visited natural attractions.
Budapest (BUD) is the most practical international gateway — approximately 2 hours via the D1/E75 motorway north through Slovakia to Ružomberok, then south into Demänovská Dolina. The Slovak motorway network connects Budapest to the Liptov region efficiently. Bratislava (BTS) is further at 2.5 hours but offers more Slovak-focused connections. Direct bus services run from Bratislava to Liptovský Mikuláš during the ski season. Within Slovakia, trains serve Liptovský Mikuláš from Bratislava (approximately 3 hours) and Košice (approximately 2 hours); from the station, local buses or taxis complete the 12km resort transfer.
Budapest (BUD) is typically the most practical gateway for international visitors, with a wide range of European and long-haul connections and approximately 2 hours' drive to the resort. Bratislava (BTS) is the Slovak capital airport at about 2.5 hours. Košice (KSC) is the main Slovak eastern airport at around 1.75 hours. Poprad-Tatry Airport (TAT), just 75km away, is the nearest airport but has very limited scheduled services. From any gateway, the final approach to Demänovská Dolina valley follows the D1 motorway toward Ružomberok, then drops into the Low Tatras valley — a pleasant drive with increasing mountain scenery.
Jasná is substantially more affordable than the Alpine mainstream. A 6-day adult Gopass lift ticket runs approximately €180–220 (2025/26 season), covering access to Jasná and the other TMR properties in Slovakia. Day tickets for Jasná alone run approximately €40–55. The Gopass multi-resort pass, covering properties across Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, and select Austrian resorts, represents excellent value for visitors planning multi-resort itineraries. Accommodation and dining prices reflect the Slovak market — significantly lower than comparable Western European resort pricing.

Jasná has a lively but unpretentious resort atmosphere, drawing a mix of Slovak and Czech domestic visitors, regional Central European skiers, and an increasingly international crowd. The après-ski scene is concentrated at the Koliesko bar and restaurant at the slope base, the Hotel Grand Jasná terrace, and a handful of mountain hütten that serve Slovak comfort food and Zlatý Bažant beer. The evening dining scene in Demänovská valley provides Slovak cuisine — halušky (potato dumplings with sheep's cheese and bacon), kapustnica (sauerkraut soup), and svíčková (beef with cream sauce) — alongside international resort standards.
Ski the Chopok North face on a fresh powder day — the north-facing aspect holds cold snow for 24–36 hours after snowfall when the south face has already been tracked and softened. The traverse from the Chopok summit to the north side requires visibility; do not attempt it in cloud or poor weather. The 12 designated freeride zones are mapped on the official resort piste map; carry a map and check avalanche conditions on the Slovak mountain rescue service (HZS) forecast. The Demänovská Cave of Liberty is an unmissable rest-day activity — one of Europe's most spectacular stalactite cave systems is a 10-minute drive from the resort. Book accommodation in Liptovský Mikuláš rather than the valley for better value and genuine Slovak town character.
Value for money (8.5) reflects Jasná's exceptional positioning: Central Europe's largest ski area at a fraction of Western European resort pricing, with consistent investment from TMR Group in lift infrastructure and snowmaking. Terrain variety (7.5) reflects the genuine dual-face mountain — the Jasná South and Chopok North sectors offer meaningfully different character — combined with 51km of confirmed groomed piste and 12 designated freeride zones. Scenic beauty (8.5) acknowledges the Low Tatras winter landscape and the quality of the Chopok summit panorama. Snow reliability (7.0) reflects the Carpathian climate — more variable than the Alps but benefiting from TMR's snowmaking investment and the mountain's 2,024m summit.
